Hordeolum or infection of the eyelids
A hordeolum externum or stye presents itself as tiny, painful, bump on the edge of the eyelid. A hordeolum can appear both on the lower or upper eyelid.
Our experienced and highly specialised consultants-surgeons treat hordeolum with state-of-the art equipment.
Like chalazion, a hordeolum is caused by an infection of a sebaceous gland – in this case, the gland of Zeis. Also an infection of Moll’s gland, or ciliary gland, near the hair follicle of an eyelash can cause a hordeolum.
The primary source of a hordeolum is usually a staph infection caused by staphylococcus bacteria.
A regular occurrence of styes may point to a weakened immune system. Make sure to consult an ophthalmologist for further investigation.
A hordeolum will usually disappear of its own accord. The lump will burst, releasing the puss. More often than not, treatment will not be required.
If the stye doesn’t burst of its own accord, an ophthalmologist will burst it for you. Never attempt to do this yourself.
Do bear in mind that a hordeolum externum is quite contagious. Try not to touch it and carefully wash your hands if you do.
