From the age of 40, many people find it more difficult to read and need reading glasses. This is known as presbyopia or age-related long-sightedness.

Focus Eye Clinic can help you to get rid of your glasses or contact lenses for good. We use the most modern laser eye technology on the market.

Presbyopia: which treatment to choose?

Glasses with bifocal or multifocal lenses

Presbyopia can be corrected with reading glasses, glasses with bifocal or multifocal lenses or contact lenses. The strength of your reading glasses or contact lenses will change until you reach the age of 60 or thereabouts.

Do you want to get rid of your glasses for good?

By opting for multifocal or bifocal implantable lenses you will be able to see clearly again close up and at a distance, without glasses! And this for the rest of your life because your natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. This artificial lens lasts a lifetime.

  • For tasks that require distance vision and for reading
  • From the age of 40, no age limit
  • Refractive errors of -23 to +15 D

Focus Eye Clinic offers laser eye surgery at a fair price. We don’t claim to be the cheapest on the market. After all, price is dictated by many factors such as the quality of the equipment and materials and the calibre of the surgeons who continuously need to keep up to speed on the latest developments.

Does my health and hospitalisation insurance cover the procedure?

Insurance companies and health insurance providers change their policies on a regular basis. This is why we prefer not to generalise about insurance cover or refunds but give each patient a personalised estimate of the possible cost of any procedure. This way, you will always know what to expect.

Are you a suitable candidate for laser eye treatment?

Our highly specialised surgeons thoroughly examine your eyes and make a detailed diagnosis. They discuss all the options with you in all objectivity. This first screening is free of charge and of engagement.

What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia or age-related long-sightedness is the gradual loss of your eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects.

When we are born, our eye lenses are very flexible. Children are able to convex (accommodate) their eye lens to such an extent that they can see really close-up images perfectly clearly. However, this accommodative ability declines as we age. The lens becomes less flexible and can no longer convex to the same degree, making it difficult to see objects at close range. We only tend to notice this when reading becomes more difficult, usually from the age of about 40 years.

This decline in accommodative ability is independent of other existing eye disorders and can occur simultaneously with short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism.

Presbyopia: symptoms

People who never needed glasses before can experience problems reading from the age of 40 onwards. To stop letters from blurring, they tend to stretch their arms when reading a book or newspaper, which is why this problem is sometimes referred to as ‘short arm syndrome’. This difficulty reading is accompanied by fatigue, headaches and loss of concentration.

Another indication is the need for a brighter light source.

Presbyopia: causes

As we age, the lens becomes harder and begins to lose its elasticity, making it more difficult to focus at short range.

This is a natural age-related phenomenon that cannot be prevented. Exactly when presbyopia starts to develop will vary from person to person.
