Relex Smile is a fairly new laser eye surgery technique performed in only a limited number of eye centres for the correction of myopia, or near-sightedness.

At Focus Eye Clinic, we have definitively chosen the proven Femto LASIK method. Studies by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) clearly show that postoperative visual acuity is superior with Femto Lasik when compared with the SMILE technique.

What is Relex Smile?

RELEX is an abbreviation of Refractive Lenticule Extraction. SMILE stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction.

Relex Smile is a surgical technique developed for the treatment of myopia. It differs from other techniques because it does not involve the creation of a so-called ‘flap’.
To reach underlying tissue, a small tunnel or ‘keyhole’ is made through which a laser can correct the deviation.

Relex Smile vs. Femto Lasik

  1. Better visual acuity with Femto Lasik
FDA studies show that postoperative visual acuity is better with Femto Lasik than with the SMILE method.
  2. Myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism
In contrast to Femto Lasik, the Relex SMILE technique currently offers no solution for hypermetropia and astigmatism; there is no communication between the measuring device and the laser and only patients with myopia or near-sightedness are eligible.
  3. No tissue loss
In the SMILE technique, cutting through 2 planes with the Femto laser is associated with tissue loss. The tissue loss equivalent is approximately 1 dioptre (margin of error); this also delays visual recuperation.

Femto Lasik

Femto-Lasik or Z-Lasik is still the most efficient technology available in the field of laser eye surgery. ‘Lasik’ refers to the method, ‘Femto’ to the technology used, in this case the latest type of laser – the Femtosecond.

With the Femtosecond laser, a microscopic flap is first made in the cornea, after which an Excimer laser is used to remove the corneal refractive error. With Femto-Lasik we can easily eliminate visual deviations of between -12 and +6.

In 2016, we also installed the brand new Excimer Wavelight 500 for the topographic controlled treatment of myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism.
